Pin Tales: Inspired by kids, Cardoza finishes first 300

evan / 2010-10-11

After Jeff Cardoza's first game of the season, he thought it was going to be a long year.

"I didn't bowl all summer," the 28-year-old New Bedford resident said, "and I had a very bad first game (167) on the first night of bowling in the Braiden's Buddies League (at Wonder Bowl)."

He started the second game with two strikes, however, and things were starting to look up.

"My wife Katie and my two sons Landon (3 years old) and Aiden (5 years old) just then walked into the bowling center," Cardoza said.

After he saw that his dad has two strikes on the scoreboard, Aiden told his dad he was going to bowl a 300 game.

"I told him it was too early to call it," he said. "I had a long way to go."

The strikes kept coming for the right-handed bowler and Aiden's hopes were up as were his dad's.

"I've had the first 11 strikes three times before," said Cardoza, "but I wasn't able to get that final strike."

This time was different, as his family was there to cheer him on.

"I felt more confident this time," he said. "I was able to hold onto my composure and I got the final strike that sealed the deal."

Cardoza ended the night with a 205 game and a 672 series.

His first 300 game was 100 pins over his 200 average in that league.

In his other league, also at Wonder Bowl, the Gary's Best Mixed League, Cardoza's average is 199.

He started bowling six years ago when his now-late uncle Ralph Cardoza asked him to join a league. He bowled that season and then took the next two seasons off. This will be his fourth season back.

His goal for the season is to bowl the best he can and help his team.

Long-range goals are for as many 300's as he can get and an 800 series. He's bowled two 700's; 726 is his high.

"I'd like to see myself go up 8-10 pins in average each year," said Cardoza. "I've been trying harder on picking up the 10 pins that have been eluding me. I'm getting more and more of them now."

He hasn't bowled any tournaments, but would like to do some in the future.

"It's not like I've been bowling since I was little," he said. "Bowling is such a new thing to me. I'd like to get better first."

For that reason, he has signed his boys up for the bumper program at Wonder Bowl on Saturdays. They're like their dad, with their own ball and bowling rags.

"They really like bowling," Cardoza said.

After he bowled his first 300 game, his teammate, Joe Monteiro, was jumping up and down.

"He's an older man who's been bowling a lot of years," he said. "He told me that was the highlight of his life. It was mine, too, and I'd like to do it again."
